BCHEA is a community of home educators formed to support both parents and children. BCHEA activities are made possible by membership involvement. Planning and organizational meetings are held twice yearly and are open to the general membership. This is when volunteer positions are traded and any business is handled by attending members.
Mission Statement
We are an association of families who have chosen to take responsibility for educating our children. Our founding principle is to accept and respect diversity. We provide a foundation for friendship and support and we encourage and inspire each other while maintaining a system for networking and resource sharing. We encourage families to create educational and social opportunities for themselves and others as their own time, energy, and interest permits. We also work to promote home education as a viable option within the greater community.
Home Education Philosophy and Practice
When people pull their kids out of school to homeschool, there is often a period of adjustment that can last weeks to months, in which you all adjust to a new pace of life and new modes of interaction. Be sure to relax and give your family time and room to breathe! Take the time to explore the interests you want to pursue and how you want to do it. Talk to other families. BCHEA families represent the entire spectrum of educational philosophies. At one end are the "unschoolers", who feel that children are naturally curious, that their curiosity is wide-ranging, and that children learn best what they learn from their own interest and efforts. Parents at the other end of the spectrum are more comfortable with a more structured schedule and curriculum. Most parents in our group are in-between, and use a combination of purchased or published curricula, supplemented with material from a variety of other sources. Many, in fact, change their educational mode depending on the maturity and interests of the the child. One of the greatest benefits of membership in BCHEA is meeting with different parents and observing the ways in which they educate their children.
